Federal officials announced this week they reached a $26 billion settlement with 5 major mortgage servicers. The settlement works toward two things: holding the lenders accountable for foreclosure process irregularities - including the notorious robo-signing - while also providing the resources for efforts intended to stabilize the persistent foreclosure crisis. $17 billion will go towards mortgage relief efforts. $3 billion will be allocated to lenders for refinancing underwater mortgages.
