The national average for 30 year fixed rate home mortgages topped 5% for the first time in almost a year reported Freddie Mac this week.  The days of sub-5% mortgages are probably over for the forseeable future. 

Increased economic growth and the expectation of higher inflation in the future has continued to push rates upward.  Just 5 months ago rates were about 4.32% - the rise to 5% means an extra $90 per month on the typical Tallahassee home mortgage.  The $90 jump is equivalent to a $15,000 increase in purchase prices.
